You Think You Know Everything

LaNegra I have to ask you why you think you no everything about hair. The way you do hair I would never come to your salon. You be burning your hair and then trying to give advise. If you are so proud of your hair then why do you relax it? You should be natural and stop faking.

Natural and Proud

Wow! Where do I begin?

*Deep breath*

Mi amiga, I do NOT claim to know everything about hair. In fact, I am not a licensed beautician and have never misrepresented that to anyone. What I am, is confident that I know MY hair and make recommendations based on my personal experiences; I share what I know, because close friends encouraged me after going through “dominican salon withdrawal”.

It’s unfortunate that you associate relaxed hair with not being proud. My decision to relax my hair has absolutely nothing to do with lack of pride. For me, the decision was based on the fact that I wanted some versatility, wanted to wear my hair in various styles. I also find it easier to comb my hair. I have friends with dead straight hair, who wish that they had some curl, so it would stand reason that the “grass is always greener…”

As for burning my hair, I post pics and videos of my hair as proof that my hair is not just long, but HEALTHY. I would rather have short, kinky hair, over long, damaged hair any day. I do not suggest that there is no risk using a blower, but I find that it’s less damaging to MY hair and logic dictates that if you repeatedly put hot tools right on your hair, it increases the risk for frail, fragile hair.

Now, don’t misunderstand…I have seen women sporting hot afros and natural styles and think that they look amazing. I think they look great and openly compliment them, but that doesn’t mean that I will look good wearing that same style. Selecting a hairstyle is a very personal decision, no different than choosing an appropriate swim suit. You may admire what one chick is wearing, but if you have shorter legs, it may not work for your body type.

Rest assured mamita, I’m not hating on anyone with natural hair. I am not ashamed of my kinks and understand enough about genetics and Dominican history to comprehend why my hair is coarse, kinky and happy.

But, here’s some food for thought…

If you believe that relaxed hair is a sign of shame, I certainly hope that you do not use any type of makeup. Mascara, foundation, eyeliner, lip-gloss. If you’re going to be au naturale, then do it 100%. You feel me?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. They were definitely eye opening.

Dios se bendiga,

LaNegra

I guess this age old debate will never die. It is YOUR hair LaNegra. You can do with it what you please. If people don’t like what you are putting out there for your blog, then they should KEEP IT MOVING! okay? There are some rogue people out there who post nasty comments b/c they have nothing better to do with their time. They know nada about what it takes to maintain a blog. It is so disrespectful to leave such comments. I don’t have a problem with people disagreeing, but immaturity & disrespect are uncalled for. It is obvious by your “cyber name” that you identify with the afro-centric part of your complex heritage. I understand that some people shun their African ancestry. I have never found that to be the case on your blog. I am thankful for the information you post here. As a woman of African decent who was effected by colonial imperialism (melting pot), I have many textures in my hair. To my understanding, Dominican sisters have a diverse background, but are REKNOWN for their expertise in straightening African textured hair like no other. I have found that my visits to my local American-Dominican salons for treatments have aided me in stretching my RELAXER for more than 7 months. Like I said, it’s your hair, & you can wear it relaxed or curly, or kinky. The nerve of some people! Que Lastima!

1xellus1, I’m glad that someone else recognizes where I’m coming from. It just saddens me a little that some feel a need to question my “pride”. You’re right…what a shame!

La Negra ( I love that handle btw),
Well said. My fav part of it all is “I am not ashamed of my kinks and understand enough about genetics and Dominican history to comprehend why my hair is coarse, kinky, and happy.” Though I am neither Dominican or of Hispanic/Latino ancestry, I come to your blog b/c I love your advice and how well you explain the method of rolling and blow drying your hair. I find that I can incorporate your methods into my regimen, even though my hair is kinky, natural, and happy. Keep up the good work mama!

Justice! How are you? How’s your hair?

Thanks for the support. I know that I strike a sour note with some and while I know most people can find some part of their body that they are insecure about, my hair texture will NEVER be an issue for me. It is, what it is. I just needed to learn how to work with my hair, not against it. I am La Negra, me entiendes :)

ohhh, lanegra…I’m all late, but I had to weigh in
You’re gonna hit me. But, when I first read the comment, I fell out laughing. Was it the bad English? The wacky accusations? Idunno, I just know I got my laugh for the evening (at your expense…my apologies haha).
But, in all seriousness *steps on soap box* this has GOT to end. As women of African descent, we should be supporting one another. As someone mentioned earlier, it is clear that you are well aware of (and secure with) your roots. This is evidenced by your screename and, most importantly, your previous blog posts. I also relax; I am extremely comfortable with my heritage. And I dare anyone to question that. Let me also remind the commenter of this fact: African hair comes in a variety of textures. Some of my family members of Moroccan heritage (and yes, they ARE Black) have a very loose curl pattern. Some members of my African-American family have hair devoid of curl and others (such as my mother) have extremely tightly coiled hair. All that to say, our diversity adds to our beauty; and we need not assume that straightening/
    altering/playing with one’s own hair texture = self-hatred.

WOW!! Its been so long LaNegra since I have been online here and so shocked that someone had the nerve to post that, and can we say spell check? Anywho, mamita keep posting and blogging! Thanks to your advice and a little research and practice of my own my hair has definitely become healthier and longer. I’m ashamed to say I fell off the bandwagon a bit, but I’m getting back on. I love blowouts and they allowed me to stretch my relaxer for 5 months. I received a relaxer and since then, it’s been about 4 months. I only use dominican products along with some other products you suggested such as Alfaparf.

sigh … what is wrong with some women? Why do they feel the need to bash when they need to be lifting up? If your happily naptural, that’s great. If you like relaxers, that’s great as well. That’s the individual’s decision. Don’t bash, especially on something you know nothing about. If anything, I want to see her hair. And like you, does she wear makeup? What does she put inside her body?

    UGH!!

It’s all good. The poster may have been young. I try not to bash people with my replies, because we’re all passionate about our beliefs. If I cannot be part of a solution, then I try to keep my mouth SHUT. LOL

Do NOT worry about falling off the band wagon. Sometimes, taking a slip is what helps you recognize something that worked well for your hair.

Just get back up, dust off and keep it moving.

BTW, I’m glad that I was able to offer some help…I’m sure your hair is looking good :D

I don’t really use anything on my hair after a dubi. I may spray a little sheen on it and occasionally put a little serum on it (you can use serum on wet or dry hair), but that’s it, nothing else.

I’m good, how are you? I am testing so many new goodies and HAVE to get the info to you. Found a shampoo called Relaxed and Natural. It can be used on relaxed and natural hair. I love it. It’s not as thick as the original Creme of Nature, but it’s pretty moisturizing. Only downside, it’s a little thin…weird, right?
