Update Requested

I am in the process of transitioning – it has been about 6 or 7 months since my last relaxer and I find reading your blog very informative and helpful. I vacilate back and forth about wheter to relax again or not. So far I haven’t given in. Anyway, the reason for the contact is to encourgage your decision to do a longer blowout how to video and to request some pics of your new growth and your hair as you go through this process. Also, to request an updated hair regimen with specific products that you are still using, ones that you may have dropped and ones you have added, etc. Thanks for all you do and for your inspiration.

Bienvenidos Vicky,

I’m so happy that you find the blog helpful. It’s truly a labor of love and sometimes hate, because taking care of our tresses is not always easy, huh?

Just so you know, you’re not vacillating alone, LOL. I really think that I’m going to break down and relax my hair soon. It has become increasingly more difficult for me to work a comb through my hair and although, I’m gentle and feel confident caring for my natural hair, I feel that at some point, I would have to cut off a significant amount of length. My hair is very find and the new growth has been making it very challenging for me.

With regards to a longer video, not a problem. I need to work on a few new videos anyway. I keep getting requests for a longer rolo video. As soon as I get some help, I’ll get that one done. I can’t work my camera AND put my rolos in :) With that in mind, can you tell me exactly what you are looking for? That way, I might be able to focus on your needs better, when I do the next blowout vid. Pics of new growth won’t be a problem either :)

As for my regimen…I’ll list my keeps/drops when I post the new video. I hate rushing, not explaining why I made my decisions. I feels it’s always important to explain why a product did not work for me, because it may also help a person decide that it MAY work for them, based on their hair type and needs.

Please, let me know if you decide to relax again. This site is about all of us, who work hard to find the balance between keeping our hair relaxed/natural, or blowing out/natural.

Mil besos,

LaNegra

Thank you so much for responding to my email. I too have fine hair, but a lot of it. My natural hair is in the 3b range I believe and I have been wearing it in a bun with an occasional blowfry and flatiron and then rolos and dubi blowing out roots only. I beleive that the constant wearing in a bun has causing some breakage and I have two thin patches of hair at my temples (seems to have occured after pregnancy — but my youngest is 6 so it has been a while) – So I have wanted to try some new styles and to show my length – it is a little longer than APL. I am probably in need of a trim, but my ends don’t seem that bad. Anyway, so far since I have been rollersetting my hair I have been able to get the roots straight with the blowdryer, but not as straight as when I blowfry and hot curl or flat iron. This is why I am thinking about relaxing, because I would just be easier to be able to rollerset and wrap and go. I have been using many different products. Most recently toque de emergencia deep conditioner and I have been thinking about giving the product you mentioned recently or the silcon mix bambu a try. My biggest question is regarding what leave-in to use to help get a smooth set, etc. This weekend I just used Infusium 23 and Morrocanoil. Very smooth ends, but my hair could have been softer. Thanks again.

    Hola bella!

I have to tell you that you made me laugh so hard @ blowfry! That’s the best term I have ever heard LMAO!

    Ok…let’s just right in…

Hair loss at the temples after pregnancy is extremely common. My cousin’s hair looked incredible during all of her pregnancies. In fact, her hair looked so full and luscious that many thought she had extensions put in, or was wearing a partial wig. Nonetheless, she experienced the loss after giving birth. Her second pregnancy hair loss was so extreme that she cried for weeks when she found out that she was pregnant with #3.

Knowing that she had the potential to lose a great amount of hair, especially at the temples, as you’ve described, she started using rosemary oil, lavender oil with a few drops of peppermint. She minimized handling her hair, because she wanted to prevent as much loss as possible. Drinking water is always key, pregnant or not. If you don’t keep your body hydrated, you certainly cannot expect your hair to be hydrated. Remember, overall health, including hair and nails, starts from within. Also, get into the habit of gently massaging your temples. No hard, rough rubbing, but gentle circular motions. If you can tolerate it, do a head stand, or hang your head down for a minute or two; this gets the blood circulating.

I relate totally to the woes of having a lot of fine hair. While, I feel blessed to have so much hair, the fact that it’s very fine means that I have to use extreme caution when doing anything to my hair. I have learned about of a lot of strategies from those who write in. One technique that I find does not work well for my hair is wearing it up frequently, even when I use ouchless products. My hair gets entangled in a band and I end up losing unnecessary hairs. I also find that up-dos put a lot of stress on my almost invisible strands.

So, for me…it’s better to wear my hair down, and if I cannot do a dubi at night (ya know I sweat like a shoe-whore in a Manolos showroom) when I workout, then I put in two or three very LOSE twits or braids and scarf my head.

As for leave-ins…I have pretty much abandoned all white leave-ins, such as Humectress, Lacio Lacio, Sedal Verano, et al. They tend to cause my hair to look flakey. My scalp looks unclean and like I have dandruff. I also find that very thin liquids are better for hard curls. For instance, I have not used Infusium 23 for many years. My stylist used it when I was going on vacation one year. I wanted Shirley Temple curls, but did not want loads of hairspray. My girls were pretty, but my hair was stiff and after a week, I was in bad shape.

Instead, I go for the clearish, oils or serums…ya already know one of my favorites: CHI Silk Infusium. I squirt out a decent amount and work my way up from the ends. I then add a dollop of serum, such as Fantasia IC (any clear serum should do the trick) and pat some on my hairline and then try to evenly distribute from the roots down.

The trick, which comes with experimenting, is to find the amount that works best. You don’t want your hair to be too heavy, too weighed down, but you want enough to give you some shine and protection from the heat. Remember, you can always apply CHI or a serum AFTER you down with your blowing, or blowfrying.

I cannot comment on the Silicon Mix Bambu, haven’t used it, but my hair doesn’t seem to respond well to most silicons. If it’s working for you, then keep it.

Hope this help…and if not, feel free to contact me anytime. Sometimes, I’m a little slow to respond but I try my best to reply to every, single question :)

    Mil besos!

    la negraaaaa,
how long did you go without relaxing? just curious.
    thanks

Thannks for the quick response. I will definitely try the oils and massaging. I am not a water drinker -so I will definitely start increasing my intake. I haven’t tried the silicon mix but was curious. I do plan on purchasing the baba de carocol to try since you had such great results. Iagree about the infusium — my hair is a bit hard. I will certainly try the CHI as my only leavein for my next rollerset and let you know what results I get.

Melonie, it’s been about a year…since my surgery. I cannot take it anymore, think I’m going to do it next week.

Vicky, you’re very welcome. Let me just add…get in the habit of buying a small jar/bottle of any new product.
I have learned this the hard way. You know what it’s like to have a whole lot of something that you don’t like, right?

I didn’t realize you had been relaxer-free ever since then. Wow, that’s really good *speechless*. I’m trying to go as long as I can b/c my hair and scalp really thrive w/o frequent relaxing. I think 5-6 months is the max. for me.
