Transitioning to Natural
I am considering transitioning my hair from relaxed to natural. However, I want to know which options I have for styling my hair. Will a Dominican blowout work for someone with a lot of new growth or natural hair?
Doing a Dominican blowout is a very good option for growing out a relaxer. However, as I tell everyone else, be prepared and expect the worst.
What I mean by that is, while you are growing out a relaxer, you can expect to see a lot of falling hair. This will be especially noticable if you are blessed with very thick and tighly curled hair.
What tends to happen is the hair snaps off where the natural hair meets up with the relaxed hair. So, keeping this in mind, you will want to be even more careful when styling and handling. Use reconstructors regularly (once every other month). Also, if you are doing your own blowouts, then you have more control.
Try to avoid pulling the relaxed portion of your hair too taut, as this will add to any breakage you may experience. If you can manage your hair by blowing out the roots only. This limits the tension that you are placing on your relaxed hair. Also, be diligent with your moisturizing treatments. This will keep the new growth soft, and help to keep the relaxed portion from drying out.
Treat your hair extremely gently and get regular trims. Trims are important regardless to whether or not your hair is natural, colored or relaxed, but you definitely want to keep on top of your trims as you grow out your relaxer.
Suerte!
