Shampoo Recommendation

Hello, my name is Garlene. I am mixed (filipino/african american) and I have a lot of thick wavy hair and my daughters have thick hair. I just want to find a good shampoo to use on my hair. I use Mixxed Chicks shampoo and it leaves my hair dry but their deep and leave-in conditioners are excellent. Can you recommend a good shampoo for my type of hair? Also, can split ends be repaired or do they have to be clipped?

Thank You,

Ms. Coleman

Hola Garlene,

You must be new to the site :) I say this lovingly, because I have been on a quest to find a replacement for my favorite shampoo for about a year. I used to swear by Creme of Nature Detangling Shampoo until the formula changed. It leaves my hair dry, brittle and impossible to comb.

I am currently working on a gallon of my Creme of Nature, but am petrified that it’s going to run out before I find a suitable replacement.

What I have found that works a little better if taking about 2 or 3 ounces of any shampoo that I intend to use and adding 2 or 3 ounces of a creme rinse. I don’t get a substantial lather, BUT I get a clean scalp; the comb slides through my hair and the overall results are similar to what I get with Creme of Nature.

So, unfortunately, I cannot make a concrete recommendation to you, but we’re all looking and scouting around for the “perfect” shampoo. You can believe me when I tell you that as soon as one has been found, I’m going to have a ticker-tape parade :D

Sorry that I cannot be more helpful, but please share if you find a shampoo that you like. I’m open to trying anything.

Besos,
LaNegra

Oh Nini, gracias!!!

I completely missed the part about split ends! You are so right, split ends are not salvageable. Once your ends are split, they are split and you have two options:

1. You can try to hold on for dear life, while you pamper your new growth, or
2. You can get your ends clipped.

If your ends are extremely split, then you really should just bite the bullet by getting your hair trimmed. If a trim won’t clean up your ends, you may consider a major cut…yeah, yeah…that sounds harsh, but no point holding on to damaged hair, right?

I was told the Esperma De Ballena(whale Sperm) Shampoo would help my hair grow back my stylist went back to DR I am not good with hair I just use to go to her and my hair was healthy and long now it sheds and is short!! I am so not happy :(

    Hola Michelle,

I’m not sure what’s causing your shedding, so it’s really difficult to make any suggestions. It could be stress, product misuse, or diet related. Can you be more specific?

NO, SPLIT ENDS CANNOT BE SAVED! cut them off before they get worse! I learned that the hard way:
My hair was long but had a lot of split ends and then I got fed up. When I was sleeping my twin and my cousin woke me up laughing and then my cousin said: “even your split ends have split ends jajajajaja” that wasnt very funny to me. and then i chopped it then next week and now its even and healthy!
Make sure you dnt use alot of flat irons or heat and stuff and do a deep conditioner at least once a week! :D

Thank you for responding………it could be stress I do have a stressful job!! My hair just stopped growing it use to be long and thick still thick just not long any more. I eat veggies. I go to the salon every two weeks b/c I hate doing hair but if I do my hair at home I was wondering what products should I buy.

    Hola Michelle,

Ok stress…that’s an ugly beast. I’m just curious, what has your stylist said?

Right now, I recommend that you pamper your hair as much as possible. Try to limit the handling that you do throughout the day and in the meantime, try Aphoghee Two Step Protein Treatment once every 8 or 9 weeks. Try to retain moisture by using oils or Humecto with each shampoo. If you need to, get a gentle trim to help retain your current length.

As for the stress itself…well, it’s not always easy to eliminate it, but try yoga if you can and soothing teas, such as chamomile (which can also be used in your hair to lighten it up a little). If you need a little more aggressive approach to stress, consider kick boxing. It will help relieve the stress and makes a body look good too.

Lastly, I’m no expert on this, but I have heard that a little bit of chocolate is great for endorphins, which might also help with your stress. So, enjoy a Hershey’s bar!

Try KeraCare Hydrating Shampoo. For me, it leaves my hair soft and detangled. Creme (or Cream- I don’t remember) of Nature left my hair dry and feeling coated after some usage.

  7.

Ali, I’ll definitely give the shampoo a try. I never even thought to try KeraCare shampoo, although I love their other products :)

  8.

I highly recommend KeraCare, Mizani, and Paul Mitchell products. They have a wide range of products to meet everybody’s specific needs, whether your hair is curly, straight, or wavy.

  9.

I’m definitely going to have to try the KeraCare and Mizani shampoos. I recall trying a Paul Mitchell shampoo, left my hair a little stripped, but perhaps I didn’t try the right one.

I really like PM Lavender Mint and Super Skinny shampoos and conditioners for relaxed, wavy, or curly hair. If your hair ever feels stripped or “too clean”, then I recommend the PM Instant Moisture shampoo and follow up with a moisture treatment every week or two. The PM Super Skinny styling products also help restore a soft feel and without weighing the hair down too much.

Otherwise, Mizani and KeraCare are the best products for wavy, curly, or relaxed hair. I have used them on my own fine, wavy hair and on others for years. They also offer different products for different hair types, which is always nice.

Finding the right products is always an experiment. So I’m glad there is a website like this to help take some of the guess work away.

im curious to know what you mean by ‘cream rinse’ ??

  12.

There are some rinses that are really thin, liquidy, then there are some thicker, creamier ones. When I refer to a “creme rinse,” I’m specifically talking about the thicker rinses.

  13.

I’ve always known a “cream rinse” to be a regular daily conditioner as opposed to a deep conditioner or conditioning treatment on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.

  14.

I guess that’s a good way to look at it. I never really consider the value of a creme rinse, other than to help detangle. See, ya learn something new, daily!

    Hi Girls

Boy im posting a lot today. I have found it really hard to find a good shampoo, this is mainly because I find the majority of shampoos very drying. I have however found that Phyto/Phytospecific shampoos are good and non drying.

I have also found another brand called Dr. Organic I love their vitamin E Shampoo.

The ingredients are really good and there is no nasty Sodium Laureth Sulphate which is the detergent that leaves hair and scalp very very dry.

Although my recommendations are not Dominican products, I do believe that they can work hand in hand with the Dominican treaments.

here is a link to Dr. Organic http://www.drorganic.co.uk
