Native American / African American Hair

I am a woman who is Lumbee Indian and African american for years I have tried to do what my friends with true kinky hair have done it was a mess trust me i have pics, lol, well anyway i am thinking about
roller setting my hair and I have other quesitons like detangling, sleeping with a roller set. I know that’s a lot but just wondering…please any advice would be great appreciated. :-D
Thanks……

Hola Andrea,

First of all, regardless to how straight, wavy or kinky one’s hair is, detangling is something that can make, or break your hair-time experience.

Before moving from NYC, I used to go every week or so to have my hair shampooed, roller set and then blown out (only the roots) and I have to say that some stylists combed my hair too harshly. I actually thought that combing with sheer force was normal lol.

I found a Dominicana who combed so gently that I barely felt her working her way through my hair. No matter how tangled, matted, or just messed up my hair was, she did a great job. As a result, I lost very few hairs as she worked on my head.

With that said, here is a link on how to detangle your hair:

Browse through the other sections of the site to read about some of the products that I use. They may work out well for your hair. However, like anything else, you have to give some of the products a try and figure out what works well for your particular hair needs and I suggest you learn to mix some products as you become more acquainted with how they work on your hair.

As for sleeping with rolos…Whew! I do NOT recommend it. My mother used to do it, but she was hardcore, commando. I tried it recently and let me tell you, my hair looked great, but my neck hurt and I didn’t get much sleep LOL.

    Hola Yolanda,

I’m sorry for the delayed response; for some reason I missed your question.
To answer your question, I recommend the same steps that a person with relaxed hair would follow.

Use mild, or detangling shampoos. Always use a deep conditioner and use protein treatments when necessary.
One of the biggest problems for curly, kinky and relaxed heads is lack of moisture, so invest in a really good, moisturizing conditioner.
Add a good leave-in conditioner to your routine too.

If you are completely natural, you have an advantage, as your hair will be less fragile than those of us who relax, but you should still use precautions when applying heat, color, or harsh chemicals to your hair. You may also want to opt for using a comb, rather than a brush. Brushes tend to pull out more hair, in my opinion.

Also, be sure to drink plenty of water, at least 8 glasses per day, and eat well. People tend to think that what you do to your hair is the only thing that impacts its health, but eating well and caring for your internal system impacts your hair, nails and general well-being.

    Hope this helps,

    LaNegra

I am also African American, and I’m trying to grow my hair. I was wondering is it safe for me to get a Dominican Blowout every two weeks?

There shouldn’t be a problem with getting a Dominican blowout every two weeks. I personally, don’t blow mine out more than that, but I know other people who get it down weekly.
