Hair Help for Dedicated Athlete

I  am a very dedicated athlete but I also like to have nice looking hair. I had a weave for about half a year after my sports seasons ended. I had to get my weave re-done every month because my hair was too soft to hold the tracks in. (they were sewed) my hair before the weave was thicker and a half an inch longer. I am wondering if my hair was damaged because of the weave or because I would also relax my hair with the weave at the same time. How should I wear my hair? Do you chicas know of any good salons in Fredericksburg, VA?

Hola guapa,

First, I want to say that I applaud your dedication to your sport. I have a good friend, who ran track. Like you, she struggled to find a balance between keeping her own hair healthy and looking pretty. She ended up opting for a short cut, but that’s not something we would all do.

Now, I’m going to be honest. I know NOTHING about weaves, other than the fact that some of them are completely undetectable. I had to consult with a few reliable sources before replying to you.

What I learned is that if the weave is done properly, you should have good results. Relaxing your hair doesn’t necessarily mean that you will experience damage.

Have you been getting trims in between weaves? This may not be the problem, just throwing it out there.

So, I have to turn this one over to the ladies to help out.

If any of you can add some input, that would be great!

Even when wearing a weave, you should make sure you keep your hair moisturized. It sounds like you lost your ends, because your ends were dry and broke off. You should also give your hair a break from weaves, because it can cause alopecia.

You may want to switch your style. Maybe do a flexi-rod set, since if you sweat out your roots it will still look good. You can braid your hair and put on a wig. You can also wear your hair in braids for about a week take it down and deep condition.

You can keep mircocutting to remove the damaged ends. To nurture your new growth, deep condition and do occasional protein treatments.

if you were always getting the weave redone, and no one saw your actual hair, what was the purpose of getting the relaxer? to ME thats like getting a relaxer and asking for a blowout — damaging. i wanted to chop my friend in the neck for getting a relaxer and a blowout when she wouldve been better off just getting blowout. no chemicals and less damage.

anywho, what was the purpose of getting a relaxer to only braid it up under a weave? damage damage damage i tell you.

I know nothing about weaves, but your comment makes sense.
