Fine, Dry Hair that Breaks

Holla La Negra!
I’ve been looking at your website for almost a year and I love it! I saw how much your advice helped with others and hope you can spare more of your hair wisdom. :-) I’m African-American with tightly coiled, kinky, fine, dry hair that breaks and sheds. I was wondering if these regimens might work. If you have any recommendations, I’d appreciate it.
Many thanks,
Shay

Hola guapa,

I cannot begin to tell you how it warms my heart to know that you have benefited from something I’ve shared.

Now, on to the issue. I love the products you are using. You are clearly, making an investment in some really good products.

Here’s where I need help:

1. Are you natural or relaxed?
2. When did your problem start?
3. Have you changed your regular routine? If so, has the changed helped, made things worse, or no difference?

Get back to me and let me know, so I can try to help :)

    Hola La Negra,

My apologies for responding to you so late. I hope your doing great and everything is well. :-P

Here are the answers to the questions you asked me earlier:

    1. Are you natural or relaxed? Natural

    2. When did your problem start? A year ago

    3. Have you changed your regular routine? If so, has the changed helped, made things worse, or no difference?
I have changed my routine by getting Dominican Blowouts and it has helped a little. The good news is my hair stays straight in very humid weather. The bad news is that after a week and a half my hair starts to itch.

    Muchas gracias

Hola guapa! Don’t ever worry about taking your time to reply. We all get busy :)

Here are the answers to the questions you asked me earlier:

Ok, so you probably need to invest in some really good moisturizing conditioners. Number one on my list is Baba de Caracol. It used to be Humecto, which is still awesome, but I LOOOOOOVE Baba.

    2. When did your problem start? A year ago
How frequently have you trimmed? Have you have a decent trim to ensure that your ends are completely clean?
Is your hair breaking at ends, coming out at the root, or breaking off close to the crown?

    3. Have you changed your regular routine? If so, has the changed helped, made things worse, or no difference?

When a blowout lasts beyond a week, that’s good, in my opinion. I prefer to wait at least two weeks before blowing again, but if my hair frizzes, or puffs sooner than that, then I just deal with it. Sometimes, I end up having to shampoo before two weeks is up, but I avoid the heat and wear my hair natural.

How long have you been using your current stylist? What does she have to say about the condition of your hair? Has she made any recommendations, given any advice?

    Muchas gracias

You’re welcome, amiga. I just hope that we can get to the bottom of the problem.

    Hey La Negra!

Recently, I haven’t been able to get my hair trimmed regularly like I want. Now, it breaks off sometimes at the ends, near the crown and comes out of the root. I know my hair is supposed to shed naturally, but this is ridiculous! lol :-P That’s why finding your site was a heaven sent. Seeing your website convinced me to try a dominican blowout and it was worth it.

The stylist I’ve been going to for 2 to 3 months told me ONLY once that I get my hair trimmed. Oh! While preparing my hair for rollos, she kept on saying that my hair was kinky, kinky, kinky. :-) Since it costs about $35 to get my hair done at the salon, I decided to do more research on your website and try it at home. I hope this helps.

Uggg!! Your hair is kinky, so what?!!
That kind of attitude irks me! Why do you need to be constantly reminded that your hair is kinky? It is, what it IS!

Your hair sounds as if it really needs lots and lots of moisture and could possibly stand a decent trim, but I’m not going to lie…your current stylist sounds like a piece of work.

If it were me, I would focus on getting my hair in excellent condition. In the meantime, shop around for a new stylist while you practice doing rolos at home. However, I don’t recommend to you mess around with the blower, because:

    1. You may cause damage to already dry hair and
    2. you need to keep as much moisture as possible.

Also, you may want to consider using Aphogee two step protein treatment. You only need to use Aphogee once every other month.
Lastly, in addition to any conditioners you buy, remember that you can use coconut oil, jojoba and other oils to keep your hair moisturized (see the recipe section).

    Keep me posted!

    Hola La Negra!
I’ve finally got time to myself. Yay! :) I took your advice and started looking into other stylists around my area. But, I have to admit it’s difficult. Hopefully, I’ll get lucky in my search and soon! :) Moving on, I came across info on what someone can expect when vistiting a dominican hair salon and now I’m a little confused at what to buy and do. (I know, I’m making this hard for myself) ;) Now, I’m trying to incorporate the products I choose with the step by step process of what’s done the stylists do in a salon. This is what and idea of what my new regime should be:
PRE-SHAMPOO TREATMENT: Cinnamon and Rosemary Oil by Alopecil OR the Coconut Milk and Avocado Smoothie
    SHAMPOO: Keracare Hydrating Detangling Shampoo
PROTEIN TREATMENT: Aphogee 2 Step Protein Treatment
RINSE-OUT CONDITIONER: Aphogee Balancing Moisturizer and/or Keracare Humecto Conditioner w/Silk Amino Acids and/or Halka Baba De Caracol Intensive Conditioner and/or Faviola Carrect La Bomba Conditioner and/or Miss Key Black Creme
LEAVE-IN CONDITIONER AND/OR TREATMENT: CHI Silk Infusion

See how confused I am. LOL Please mamita I need a lil help! :)

    Mucho Gracias,
    Shay
