Halka Baba de Caracol – Review

This is just the fix that a junkie needs. Ya heard me!!

I am a HUGE fan of Humecto and UNA products, particularly the moisturizers. However, I may have to ditch everything in my closet for this one, special product.

I have lots very fine hair and that means lots very serious tangles. I always comb thoroughly before shampooing and avoid pulling my hair up in the shower (ya know that only looks good in the commercials right?). However, I am still left trying to work out tangles before I turn the water off.

Baba de Caracol (snail slime with silk) worked magic on my hair. I applied it after shampooing with my conditioner concoction. I used a quite generous amount, because when you have a lot of hair, like I do, it does no good to skimp on the goods. I’m sure that I used 1/3 of the jar with this first use. More hair, means you use more product, but it means that my hair remains healthy. But, for $9.99 a jar, that is only $3.33 per use and I’d pay three times that, if not more, in the salon. Get where I’m going with this?

Anyway, I applied that product and put my plastic cap on. I had nowhere to go…in case you all aren’t aware, most of us in PA are snowed in. I figured, no better time to pamper myself, like today. There are no directions on the jar, so I just figured that since it states it’s a deep conditioner I’d leave it on for a minimum of 20 minutes.

I got to yapping with my friend on the phone and the next thing you know, 35 minutes had passed.

Here’s the good part…

I turned on the water, grabbed my shower comb and expected to have to work the tangles out. Wouldn’t you know, the comb just glided through my hair, like skates on ice! I did not have to flex a muscle, didn’t have to section my hair, didn’t have pull or anything. My hair instantly felt like silk. Ahhhh!

I also noticed that I didn’t get the normal frizz. Typically, if I wait around and don’t put my rolos in right away, I start to frizz. Not this time. My hair felt a little straighter and a whole lot softer.

It gets better…

So, I put in my rolos and yapped some more on the phone. Another hour passed (yeah, yeah…I know…I chit-chat too much lol). I touched my hair to see how damp it was and was shocked at the feel. My hair felt softer than it has ever felt.

I cannot wait to take out my rolos. I’m under the dryer as I type. I’m sure that this is going to be a staple. Hmmmm….wonder if I can find Baba de Caracol by the gallon.

    Hey Chica,

Had to give you a high five for the Baba review. I LOVE this product! Picked it up on my last trip to New York at the suggestion of my mother-in-law, and she was right on target. She swears that it softens her hair like nothing else. Well, she wasn’t wrong. It separated my curls nicely, and detangled like a pro! I have the rinse and the deep conditioner. I’m mad that I didn’t try the shampoo, but will definitely be picking that up next time. This is a product I CANNOT live without!!

  2.

Yes, Halka Baba De Caracol products are the best.

  3.

OMG, snailslime with silk! I was scared @ 1st. LOL but the results you mentioned sound incredible. I DC overnight w/ Hollywood Olive Oil Cholesterol & made the mistake of twisting my hair b4 putting it in bantu knots. I ended up having to cut off an inch b/c I couldn’t get the tangles out of my thin hair! I will def look into this prod. Thanks so much for sharing. OMG (still trembling about the snail slime). LOL

  4.

It sounds gross, but mami it works!!! Now, I have to find out it if it’s safe to use weekly. It’s my new fave.

    Hola Negrita:
Alguna recomendacion?

Pues, tengo practicar, no? :)

Me entiendes?

Ok, productos.

    Embrazos!

    Hola Negrita:
Gracias mami!!!I really going to give this a try my hair can use a break ….what I’m saying I can use a break….So I should dubi my hair every night? The only product I use between shampoos is Pureology Smoothingelixir(I add a couple of drops of Lavander and Rosemary essential oil)Do you use Chi infusion between shampoos on dry hair?I go to the gym almost every day ….I know this sound crazy but if I start to sweat to much I slow down so the roots of my hair don’t get curly…LOL.. so my cardios are not too good but I do cardio for an hour….en lo que veo la novela.By the way your spanish is very good you may need a little practice….con un latino caliente is always good : )( yo espero entiendas my ingles).Abrazos y gracias.Chicahot

    Buenos dias amiga!

Yes, give your hair a break, especially if it is fine. She can get her blowouts every week, without a problem,
but she also keeps her hair shoulder length; she gets it trimmed frequently to cut off split ends. I have not heard of Pureology (will be looking into that), but yes, adding rosemary and lavender is a great idea.

OMG! You made me laugh so hard!!! I know exactly what you mean about not wanting your roots to curl up!! However, the point of doing cardio is to benefit your heart, right? So, you miss the point if you are not reaching your optimal heart range.

For us, curly/kinky headed girls, working out is a chore, because we then have to deal with our hair. I look at it like this…having beautiful hair when my body is unhealthy is worth nothing, nada. Me entiendes? I workout almost every day too, but cry every time I do my rolos, because I know that I’m going to get the frizzes the following day, LOL.

Gracias!!
And yes, your English is excellent!

Please, stay in touch! I love to know how everyone is doing.

    Besos!

  9.

Like I said to you before LaNegra I love working out but my hair be looking like a hot mess(Tuesday thru Friday’s). My hair really sweats. But my work-outs feel so good, it really does my body good.

  10.

Don’t I know it! I try to find a pretty way of wearing my hair, but sometimes I’m just a frizzy mess LOL

  11.

I haven’t tried the product yet but I been in search of it. I have natural hair and have been looking for something that will help my hair. I did find though that the whole Baba de Caracol line is available on http://www.dominicanbeautystore.com and you can get 64oz for $21.99 (plus shipping). Just FYI. Thank you for the product info. I will DEFINITELY be coming back to this site.

  12.

Ohhhh Chocolate! If you were here, I’d give you the biggest hug!!! I could not find Baba de Caracol in various sizes. I love you!!!

    Mil besos!!

  13.

LaNegra … I told you about this product a LONG time ago LOL! I’m glad you tried it and like it. Did you ever try the whale sperm conditioner? I have em both, but Im down to my last drops of baba de caracol so I am saving before I move back to the US (stationed in Japan). So Ive been making conditioners, oils, silk protein serums, together and my hair likes it so far.

Other than that, I use the whole Baba de Caracol line. It leaves my hair REALLY SOFT and smells great. I also use the Apretol (hope I spelled it right) as my pre-poo. I believe you mentioned it as well.

  14.

OH!!! I knew that someone mentioned Baba…but couldn’t recall who. Um…my bad LOL.

I LOOOOOOVE this product. So, let me ask…how frequently do you use it? It’s about to replace almost everything in my closet. Yes, I did try the sperm whale. I liked it, but I didn’t get the same silkiness that I got with Baba de Caracol.

When are you leaving for Japan? Does that mean I won’t hear from you for months? You HAVE to keep in touch.

    Mil besos,

    LaNegra

  15.

I’ve been living in Japan for a couple years now, but I am now emparazada, and I have to move to California. Unfortunately, I havent heard of ANY salons in the San Diego area :( . The closest is LA and well, I, carrying twins and I dont think mi esposo would approve.
Ive used this product since June09 and I admit I use it every week when I have enough LOL. You are also right, the whale sperm does not give the same silkiness as the baba de caracol. I too have to replace EVERYTHING in my hair closet since I dont think most of it will last in storage for a month or so. I dont know. But as soon as I get to Cali, I’ll be online ordering my halka ASAP.

I want to try the leche cabra combos though. Seems interesting.

Also, I finally had the blowout experience when I went with my fiance to his home in the Bronx. Ugh! Such an amazing result! I gotta admit, i had to have my mother in law ask the lady to turn down the heat on my dryer (Pibbs=no joke) and the blowout was no joke either. Whew! Talk about heat, but my hair was perfect and so healthy. I plan on buying a dryer once I get to the US since they wont ship blowers overseas.

  16.

Congrats!!! Now you know you definitely have to keep me posted, not just about your hair :D

I think your products will last for a month, or more, because I have some that I use so infrequently, but when I pull them out several months later, they are still good. But then again, I don’t know if I would want ALL of my products just sitting around.

Oh yeah…I don’t turn my Pibbs all the way up. I use it on a warm setting. The point is to dry my hair, not “fry” my hair. LOL

I don’t dry any quicker by turning up the heat. As for the blower…some stylists really know how to avoid hitting the scalp, others…not so much.

  17.

Well, twin girls! Which equals 2 quinceneras. My hair, ugh.
I need a trim, quick. Hair had been breaking and I hate.it.
I found a good blow dryer OMG it gets so.hot. but all will be well
Once I get it trimmed and roots straightened.

  18.

OHHHHH I’m so happy for you!!!! Please, please, please…email pics when the girls arrive :D

Get a trim and continue to condition. Your hair should be growing like a weed! Pregnancy hormones usually make for a head full of hair. I cannot imagine it’s any different, due to twins (wow, I’m so excited for you!). Two quinceañera and twice as broke, huh? LOl

Which blower did you get? Girl, don’t make go buy a new blower

  19.

This sounds great…I’ve been using Racioppi as my treatment but I think they have changed their formula because my hair has been dry and breaking…Does anyone know where I can buy the Baba treatment in New York?

  20.

You should be able to find Baba at most of the beauty supply stores in NYC, but I got my first jar at Ra-Ma on Columbus and 105th Street.

  21.

Hi I posted back in October, Im the uk hairstylist, remember moi? Anyways, so I was in love with my silicone mix but….. then I started to use this and WOW AMAZING is the only way to describe this product. I do a lot of weaves and extensions and this made every clients hair and my own bleach damaged hair feel and look like silk, I am actually online now ordering 5 tubs to be shipped over! I am also in LA in June and will be buying in BULK , Oh yes, I am HOOOKED because this stuff is the TRUTH.! lol

Can anyone recommend any other products?

    Claire

  22.

Yes mamita, I remember you and so do others!

Isn’t Baba de Caracol the best?! I don’t know how I missed it for so long. However, I had been trying so many different products over the years. This is DEFINITELY a keeper!

Have you tried CHI Silk Infusion yet? That’s another staple for me. It’s my favorite leave-in. I can use it on my hair wet, or dry. I find that silicone products are counter productive for me, but I have friends and family members who love them. Silicone Mix is one of the faves.

  23.

I don’t know how to thank you for this recommendation! I picked some up at a local BSS on a whim, and it is AMAZING! My staple was previously La Bomba and Silicon Mix combined, and it works really well…but the slip and softness I get with Baba is on a whole different level. I wasn’t so impressed with the shampoo (I’m a Creme of Nature lover myself), but as soon as the condish hit my head, it didn’t matter. I set with some rosewater and silk aminos, and I was good to go! A week later, and my hair feels just as soft as it did on day one :-)

And another huge thank you for your tips on wrapping right after rollersetting…worked like a charm. My hair didn’t get poker straight (didn’t really expect it to!), but it was very wearable, smooth, and shiny :-)

  24.

    Hola Crys,

I am all over Baba de Caracol! Silicon Mix was not good for my hair, let it too difficult to comb, but Baba….oh, I love it!!
Yes amiga, I’m still searching for a Creme of Nature replacement. If you find something you like, share with us.

As for your hair, you keep practicing. You’ll see that it gets easier and better each time :)

Now, I have to say that you taught me something. I have been putting a cap full of silk amino acids in my spray bottle and spritzing my hair, but I’m not a huge fan of the smell. Does rosewater have a nice fragrance? If so, I’m on it!

  25.

    Hi LaNegra!

It’s funny, Silicon Mix or LaBomba by themselves do absolutely nothing for my hair, but when I mix them together and put them on, they work really really well…makes my hair feel soft, but really really strong at the same time. I fear my hair getting used to Baba, so I’ll probably alternate them from week to week. I haven’t found a replacement for the CON yet. I’ve tried, but keep going back to the reformulated one. Even though it’s not as good as the original, it still gives me more slip than anything else I’ve found :-(

I’m definitely going to keep practicing rollersetting and wrapping though, I’m already noticing the benefits of not flatironing in terms of less broken and stray hairs floating around :-)

Oh yes, rosewater has a phenominal smell! Roses, but not heavy like great-grandma’s perfume, lol…very light, and you can’t smell the SAA’s at all. It gives an added boost of moisture, and it’s only a couple of bucks for an 8 ounce bottle…can’t beat a deal like that!

  26.

Crys, you should see less breakage and if you are conditioning well, which it sounds as if you are, you will probably see that your hair is longer, and healthier!

It’s a good idea to switch up conditioners. I have heard that if you use the same product too frequently that your hair doesn’t respond well. I’m not sure that I’d apply that theory to relaxers.

So, where do you find rosewater? I’m going to try to pick so up today!

  27.

I found the rosewater right in the beauty supply! If it’s not mixed in with the rest of the hair products, I’d imagine that it would be with the skin care products, because it makes an awesome toner. And if you use mineral or powder foundation for your face, a couple of spritzes of the rosewater sets and settles it on your skin in just a couple of minutes without messing it up :-) So many good uses for such a small price!

  28.

Hey lady. Well, the twins are great. I have 11 weeks left in the pregnancy and we are SO EXCITED!

I have YET to purchase any of my products since I have been trying to settle in. Ive been using PanteneProV Great Lengths. Ill admit, it does protect against the breakage and I have a little bit of Halka rinse left so I use that too. As far as the hair growth and pregnancy hormones, VERY true. My hair is just about at the center of my back (YIPEE)! I havent done and dubis lately. Id say at teh most I blow my hair straight with the roundbrush once a month ( i have oils and creams I apply before blowing to protect) and for the remaining 3 weeks i wash, allow to air dry and wear it in a bun.

  29.

Hola preciosas. My hair is natural (4b) and it is so hard to find products that keep my hair moisturized. To keep my hair in shape I have to walk around with a sample-sized bottle of product. Are there any kinky-haired ladies that use this product? Are there any stylists that use these productos on ladies with 4b hair? Can you give me a run down of pros and cons? Help!

  30.

Hola Cheka, I cannot speak for everyone (hope others chime in), but I got great results with my hair prior to re-relaxing. Also, my friend who is completely natural with pretty coarse hair LOVES IT!!!

Pros: Leaves my hair like silk, soft and manageable.
    Cons: cannot keep name one.

    Hope others will speak up.

  31.

I must agree, i am African American and it works well on my hair. Its helping me transition from relax to natural.
