Putting Rollers (rolos) in the back – Video

Ok guapas!

Al fin hay un video. I have been trying to get a hold of a video camera to actually show how to do the steps involved in doing a dominican blowout. I have to thank my dear friend, Gustava, for surprising me with a brand new camera. Besos chica!

In this first video I just wanted to show you how to get your back rolos in place.

You start by sectioning your middle mohawk, then pin up the left and right sections. Start putting your rollers in from front to back. The back is usually the hardest to do, but once you get the hand of it, the rest is very easy. It’s best to pull the hair up toward the ceiling or forward if it’s any longer than mine. Then just smooth the ends around the rolo and roll until you get to the end.

Thanks for the video…..you make it look so easy :-)
How often do you relax your hair?

  2.

It IS easy (after you get the hang of it), but I will not pretend that it started off that way for me.
It took time to get it just right.

I relax my hair based on need. I take a lot of aerobics classes, so I sweat a lot and find that I sweat my hair out much quicker.
If I see that I have a lot of crecimiento nuevo (new growth), then I’ll relax, but never, EVER sooner than 8 weeks.

Have you tried doing a roller set yet :)

Sigh…actually I did try a while ago and it was disasterious…so now thanks to you and your site, I have been inspired to try again. Like you said before, going to the salon is truly an educational experience….I know I can get the hang of it once several attempts are made. The only thing I am waiting on now is the Pibbs dryer….someone in my area is selling a 514 on craigslist for $200…..she said its a little over a year old and has a hard time opening the front flap…do you think this is a good deal or should she come down some?… BTW I am so SO thrilled that you are now up and running on video…please thank your friend for the gift :-)

I was about to chew her out for trying to sell the Pibbs for the price of a new one, but apparently the prices have gone up big time!

I think I paid less than $200 for mine brand new just a year ago. So, with that said, I guess it’s a steal. I just checked and most places are selling them for $399 and UP.

Oh, you don’t even know how much I thanked Gustava! I just need to get the hang of working it now :)

So happy that you’ve done a video! Cause I had a horrible experience trying to get a DBO. After setting up an appointment with her, 2 weeks in advance, she told me that she couldn’t do a BO on my type of hair. It was too kinky an coily for her…whateva.
I’m gonna do it my own self!
    Thanks Chica!

Hey chica! I’ll tell you this much. If you find a salon that is willing to do your “kinky and coily hair” be careful, because then they may use too much heat.
That’s one advantage to learning to do your own hair. It’s better to prevent damage than try to repair it.

Hi…I got my Pibbs 514 today!! YAY!…. So now I am on a hunt for the turbo 1500….actually one of the salons said she would sell me a turbo 2000….do you think that would be too much for home use?
Also, what have you heard or what do you know about the CHI blow dryers?
    Thanks!! :-)

  8.

    Congrats!!!
I think that the Turbo 2000 would be good. You are going to have to learn how to keep the air-flow from hitting your scalp and definitely want to keep that blower moving, as not to fry one particular section of your hair.

I have heard of CHI blowers, but never used one, so cannot recommend them.

    Keep me posted!

    Hey La Negra,
I’m back after too long. I have been using the rolos magneticos and they have been working really well. What I am wondering is if it’s okay for me to rollerset my hair 2-3 times a week. Not necessarily do the blowout but just the rollerset. I workout 5-6 times a week. Thanks!

    Hola Elise,

Yes, yes, yes!! It’s so much better to put rolos in, especially if you are not going to blowout your hair.
I work out a lot too and my hair is often frizzy, FRIZZY, but I’ll say that if you can shampoo your hair, put in rolos and let your hair air dry or sit under the dryer with cool air, rather than he, it’s the best solution.

The only thing you want to be cautious of, is if you have curly, frizzy, kinky hair, you want to be sure to moisturize really well.
You’ll need to shampoo your hair to remove the sweat. At the very least do a thorough rinse after working out. Then dry a deep conditioner, but
when in a rush, try using one of the oil concoctions I listed before you even head out to the gym, then shampoo as normal.

Now, pull those rolos out and put them to good use :)

    Besos,

    LaNegra

    Hola La Negra!
I think my issue with the rolos magneticos is that I have thick hair and I think I had too much hair on one roller. Anywho… Rollersetting has been getting better I’m currently 9 weeks post relaxer and not doing too bad, so I’m doing something right! HaHa! I often conditioner wash if I’m working out and that seems to be working really well and it keeps my hair pretty moisturized. Gracias por todos!

Hola Elise! Puedes explicarme que es, “conditioner wash?” Is that a special type of shampoo?
Entonces, thick hair is a blessing, but it’s definitely requires effort when doing it yourself. Can you put bigger rolos, or perhaps more rolos in your hair? That will cut down on drying time. However, if you’re doing a good job…you may want to leave things as they are, right? :D

  13.

Whats up LaNegra? Thanks again for all your great work here!! I have a two questions about rolos:

    1. How many clips do you use for each rolo, and how are you putting them in so that they are nice and tight? Mine tend to be all floppy after I clip them

    2. How many rolos are you using for your roller set? About how many do you put in the mohawk and how many on the sides ?

My length is about an inch or so shorter than yours so I wanna try to duplicate how you are doing your rollerset..

    thanks and much love,
    canela

Hey Canela! Hace mucho tiempo. Como estas?

    1. I use one clip on each side of my roller (most of the time). I always use two on each rolo when doing the mohawk, but sometimes only put one clip on the front column.

    2. I think I use about 21 rolos total. I use approx 7 for the mohawk. Three from forehead to crown; one on the crown and 3 for the back. Then I do the inner column – 4 rolos and then the two columns in the front (by my face) and I usually put three there.

    3. Your length is only an issue when 1: choosing the correct size rolos and 2. putting enough rolos to dry quickly.

I’ll do another video and try to focus on where I place the clips. It’s a little difficult, because I don’t usually have any help when I am doing my vids, but I’ll get something posted for you as soon as I can.
