I Found a Dominican Salon – Now What?

Ay! This is a problem that some of us ladies have. We find the Dominican salon, the only one in the area and then assume that we’re going to get the royal treatment. HA!

¡Me oigan bien! Just because you come across una dominicana does not mean that she will be your dream come true. It doesn’t mean that your hair will never fall out and that she may not contribute to your existing hair issues. Why? Because it happened to me. Can you imagine?

It is your hair and it is your responsibility to get to know it, because you and only you have to live with it. It’s a myth to think that just because a person is from the Dominican Republic that they can do hair and better yet that they can do your hair.

I learned by trail and error that no cada dominicana es egual; not every dominicana is the same. I had my regimin down to a science. Although, I was not very good at self relaxing, I can do a mean blow out, but I noticed that my hairline was disappearing, vanishing, going buh-bye. I had not changed any products, only used the best stuff straight from d.r. or from NY. So what the hell was going ON?!

Al fin, I realized that my stylist was not conditioning my hair after a relaxer, touch up. She was saving time by not conditioning my hair. I got out of her shop a lot quicker, but my hair was in a mess.

With all of that said, you need to treat a dominican stylist just like you would treat any other stylist. Look around to see if there is a beauty license on the facilities. Look at other customers and ask them how long they have been going to the stylist. Ask if she follows directions and make sure that your hair is adequately conditioned. Otherwise, you may end up nurturing a head full of damaged hair.

Hi.. thanks for the blog! I have been going to Dom now for about 5 years, but now have a baby and the family needs have changed a bit. I am not able to go as often as I used to before baby which was once a week so now I have to figure this out on my own or go for 3 weeks without wash. (I cant do that)
I read your blow out how to, but I cant get that far because I cant seen to get the rolling process right. Everytime I try to roll my hair when its wet, turns out to be a disaster. Will you talk a little about the rolling process and the products you use for setting your hair. Also, would you recommend the Goya coco for african american hair?
    Thanks so much!!!!

Yes African Americans can you crema de coco!

It’s not only for dominicans, or Caribbeans, it’s for anyone with curly, kinky, coarse, or dry hair. It gives you moisture and lots of shine. For me, it also helps to detangle.

Hi- I am huge fan of Dominican hairstylist! However, I was lucky with 2 out of the 3 I have used. So choose your hairstylist wisely.

Have you used any of the dominican hair relaxers- ie the Nacidit, Salerm (Spanish) or Silicon Mix relaxer? I currently use phytospecific which is great but crazy expensive.
