Monica’s Hair Salon Dominican Stylist from New York
465 Oriana Road,
Newport News, VA 23608-3717
(757) 833-8202

Hours:
Monday- Saturday 10am-7pm
Sunday 10am-5pm

Stylist:
n/a

Décor/Ambience:
The salon is located on in the Oriana Shopping Center off of Denbigh in Newport News between Warwick Blvd and Jefferson Ave. It’s about 15 minutes away from I-64 and within minutes of Ft. Eustis Transportation Army Base.

The salon is rather small and dimly lit. The walls were orange and green. I expected the space to be spacious and clean, but what I saw was a salon that really needed some TLC.

There were six stylist chairs, six hooded dryers and two wash bowls.

Products:
Monica’s flyers advertised Sebastian, Salerm, Nexxus, and Affirm, yet I didn’t see any of these products at the stylist chairs or wash bowl. I brought in my Baba de Carcol, in hopes for a good deep conditioning treatment.

Pricing:
When I asked the receptionist/shampoo girl/rolo stylist what the price for a rolo set would be, she said it’s usually $35. Then she asked me if my hair was natural or relaxed. I told her relaxed, then she said my hair didn’t look relaxed and it would be an additional $10 for my natural hair. I was slightly perturbed at her demeanor, but it was first thing in the morning so I gave her the benefit of a doubt. I also asked for a deep condition using my own product. The deep condition was $5 and BOYP was $5. The total price for my head was $55.

Experience/Customer Service:
I arrived at the salon around 10am on Friday morning. I walked in and told the receptionist what I wanted. She gave me a receipt then sent me to the waiting area for the wash station. There was only one older lady in the salon already under the dryer with a set of neat rolos in her hair. I waited for about 15 minutes until the receptionist, who then became the shampoo girl came back to seat me at the wash bowl. I told her that I was tender headed so to please be gentle with my hair. Her response was “Hmph, you’ve got a lot going on here huh?” I gave her a blank stare. Once she started washing my hair, I literally wanted to jump up out of the chair with shampoo in my hair and run out. I felt like she was scrubbing my head raw.

Then she told me that she should have charged me extra because my hair was long. At this point, again, I should have left. After 3 lathers, she rinsed the shampoo out then added my conditioner and sat me under the hooded dryer. As an hour passed by, the client that was there before I came in had her rolos removed, the entire length of short bob blown out, and then flat ironed.

Honestly, I wasn’t impressed with the stylist’s work, but the client didn’t complain either. A client that came in after me had her natural curls blown out. A few times, the client had to tell the stylist that the blower was directly on her scalp. This client didn’t complain either as she left, she also didn’t tip, as I heard the ladies say in Spanish. I was next up to get my conditioner washed out and then sat in the chair for 15 minutes before the same girl who shampooed me, installed the rolos. She seemed to do a good job with the rolos. I just wanted her to be a little more gentle combing my hair. Another hour and a half under the dryer, then I was sat in the other stylist chair. She took her time, by having lunch in the waiting area before she started my on head.

Again, I literally wanted to jump out of the chair and run out because of the stylist’s technique. I asked her to only blow my roots so that I could maintain a little volume and just smooth out my roots. Apparently, she didn’t like my request and decided to burn my scalp instead. After 15 minutes, I told her that it was done and it was fine. I paid my $55 and ran out of the salon. So, all of this sounds bad right? Nope, I walked out and it was drizzling.

Overall:
Worst salon experience ever. Enough said.

Someone just got on my case about being slow to post this review. Sorry all

Anyway, I cannot tell you how happy I was to learn that there was FINALLY a Dominican Salon in Pitt. This is great for us in the Ohio/Pitt area.
Naturally, I needed to call and verify, then of course, I started thinking…well, I could use a relaxer…after all, the weather will cause frizzing. Right? Right.

I’m not going to lie, it is REALLY scary for me to try new stylists, because I know how to do my own hair and I have grown really particular. There are only a handful of stylists I trust. However, I heard that the owners were not only Dominican, but were from NY. What more was there to doubt? Nada.

So, I called and the first thing I asked was, “Can I bring my own products?”
Usually when I ask that question, I get, “Um…what?”

I knew Primo was the real deal, because the response was, “Yes, of course! What are you bringing?” That response pretty much signed the deal for me.

Ok, on to the experience. First, I was surprised to learn that Antonio, the gentleman who made my appointment, was not only there to answer the phones, but he is a bonafide stylist. He and his mother run the salon, have others located in Connecticut and money-earnin’ Mount Vernon. So, I’m in the chair now, nervous, anxious and praying that I will be happy. I can do my own rolos, right, and actually my own relaxers, but it takes FOR-EVER!

First thing the owner does is oil my scalp. What?! Not even my regular girl in NYC does that. Kudos to “mom” for that.
Next, she begins to apply my relaxer in very small sections. She didn’t rush, she didn’t slap the relaxer on, she was very, VERY careful and gentle. What’s really interesting is the owner, who did my relaxer (cannot remember her name), studied with the creator of Mizani. That was another Kudo for her!

After my relaxer was rinsed out, I was placed under the steamer with a conditioner. I didn’t bring one, because I knew that they had other really good products in the salon. When the conditioner was rinsed out, I was expecting “mom” to do my rolos. Now, the thing that worries me most is the fact that my hair tangles and typically people like to RIP my hair out. So, I was a wee bit surprised with “mom” told Antonio to put my rolos in. Antonio did my rolos. Much to my surprise…he managed to get my rolos in without ripping hair, and he definitely combs very gently; that was a total shocker.

The verdict?

This Mother and son, Dominican dynamic duo are HOT!! They have incredible products and are not just stylists, but they both are very into the health of the hair. They KNOW their stuff and the fact that the salon was PACKED speaks volume. Ironically, it felt like I was back in NYC. There were customers from NY, as well as other latina customers.

The other thing that I really liked is the fact that they had an African-American stylist working there too. She does excellent work.

The Pros:

You can bring your own products – but I would ask first, out of respect.

They did NOT try to cut, or even trim my hair. You all know most salons want to chip-n-clip whenever they get a new client.

They are from NY, so they know how “we do.”

Don’t have a favorite product? No problem, they have excellent products in the salon and know what to use on your hair.

The atmosphere is very inviting and comfortable. I felt like I’d been a customer for years and years. It’s like a big family in the salon.

The Cons:

This may not be a problem for Ohio and Pittsburgh people, but we New Yorkers are used to walk-in salons. No appointments necessary. This, however, is not a major problem. They are open Mondays – Saturdays, which is great!

Hmmmm….I’m all out of cons

I highly recommend them to everyone! I will definitely be back in the salon and if you try them out, get 20% if you mention dominicanblowout.com!

Thanks for posting the information on Revive Hair Spa in Inglewood! I took your recommendation and tried Tia out this past Friday. I had a great experience! She’s really into the importance of caring for your hair. I traditionally go to Dominican shops but I’ve found that the ones in LA aren’t really on the same level as those on the coast.

While Tia does not use the same method, she did wet set me and used a technique to straighten the roots that used alot less tension than what I’m used it. My hair came out very shiny and its continued to look great through my workouts this week. She did a steam conditioning treatment on my hair and also put saran wrap around my hair while I sat under the dryer to get a cellphane. If I had been thinking, I would’ve had her take a picture so I could post it here, but it looks as good as the pictures she provided to you! Thanks for the recommendation you’ve saved my hair:)

Ohhh amiga! I’m so happy that your experience was positive. I had a feeling that Tia would be a winner.
I really do wish that you had taken pics. Don’t forget to “hook us up” next time you go.

Kudos to you, Tia!!

It’s located at 3711 High Point Road, for those in the know, it’s the TJ Maxx shopping center. The phone# is (919) 638-8207 and the sign out front is advertising doobie’s for $15.00. I haven’t been, so no co-sign from me; but there was quite a line out front. That’s usually a good sign.

Kandi-Style

Good looking out Kandi!

If you get your hair done there, let us know. $15.00 for a dubi?! I cannot even get it that cheap in NYC anymore. LOL

Can you also find out the name of the salon, so I can add it to the maps? Gracias!

I am new to this sight and totally new to Domincan blowouts. 3 days
ago, I had no idea what they were but stumbled across and article on
the Internet.

As a half Jamiacan,/Irish-German woman, I was intrigued to find a
place that could tame my curls. I did a little looking and tried a
place near the school where I teach after school today. The salon is
called Dominican Creations and is located at 48th and Balitmore in the
West Philly area.

The salon was quite clean and I had no wait. I got the deep condition
and then wash and blow dry. My goodness, these ladies know how to get
hair straight and shiny. Perhaps too ruthless with the blowdryer and
straight iron for my taste. I like more curl with my smooth but
that’s a minor complaint. My hair is soft and smooth and shiny.

The total cost for trim, deep condition, wash and blowdry was $47.
That’s not bad IMO. I was out in an hour.

A good place!
